Introduction

Epping Boys’ High School is a school with a fine tradition of high academic performance and strong extra curricula activities - striving for achievement through participation, responsibility and the delivery of quality education.

Epping Boys' High School's Motto "Strive to Achieve" is one that has been taken seriously by staff and students alike since the school's foundation in 1957.  By hard work, dedication and the setting of high standards, the school has built up an enviable reputation and very sound traditions.  Legitimate pride in past academic, sporting and cultural achievements in turn helps to generate further achievement and the pursuit of excellence.

At Epping Boys' High School we acknowledge that education is more than a simple process of knowledge transfer.  It involves growth and development of mind, body and spirit.  This philosophy is exemplified in the outstanding contribution made by our Senior Students, Prefects and Students’ Representative Council members.

Our overall high level of achievement and wide recognition as the leading comprehensive boys’ high school in Sydney is based on:

  • Providing an environment where learning is expected, possible and challenging.
  • Providing an atmosphere of acceptance and respect in a caring environment with structured welfare programs designed to nurture self-respect.
  • Offering a broad curriculum with sufficient course flexibility to cater for those whose goal is tertiary study at university or TAFE and those seeking to enter the work force more directly.
  • Actively encouraging all students to be involved in one or more of a wide variety of extra curricula activities.

Shown below are examples of outstanding involvement and performance of students in three areas:

  • Academic excellence
  • Sporting successes
  • Extra curricula activities

Academic Excellence

  • Over the last decade HSC results are consistently well above state averages with Epping Boys' High School course means exceeding state averages in 83% of all courses over the last five years.
  • HSC results are monitored against the School Certificate performance of the cohort two years previously.  Statistics reveal that we consistently fall in the top decile of schools in regard to this ‘value added’ dimension.
  • Over the last four years, 22.2% of Year 12 students obtained UAIs in excess of 90.  This is double statistical expectations.
  • Tertiary education entrance is realised by 70% to 80% of Epping Boys' High School students.
  • Wide recognition in the Premier’s Awards and Minister’s Awards for academic excellence - - - with eleven boys having obtained awards in the last four years.
  • Over the last four years an average of 43% of HSC results across all courses have fallen in the top two bands of the state with 93% of Extension candidates scoring in the top two bands of the state.
  • The school has a strong program of targeting students with special literacy needs.  By Year 8 we have less than 1% of students remaining in the low level of attainment and 98% scoring at the High and Proficient levels in the ELLA tests.  The following table compares mean scores:

In spite of the fact we are a boys' school with almost 60% of students having a non-English speaking background we have consistently exceeded state means.

  • Numeracy results reflect the same level of achievement.  By Year 8 we again have less than 1% of students in the low level of attainment and 95% scoring at the High and Proficient levels.  This compares to 4.5% and 75.5% respectively across the state.
  • Large numbers of students are encouraged to enter national competitions in Mathematics, Chemistry, Economics, Business Studies and Computing.  Our boys consistently obtain outstanding results far in excess of national averages.

Sporting Excellence

  • The school has a long and distinguished tradition of outstanding sporting achievements.  In addition to a vigorous PDHPE program, all boys engage in sport from Years 7 to 12.  In a period of declining interest in inter-school sport, we have maintained a 40% level of student involvement in a grade competition with over 60 teams competing.
  • Epping Boys' High School has been Zone Champion School in the NW Metropolitan High Schools Sports Association nine out of the last eleven years, and is currently the Champion Zone School for the 2004 winter season.
  • Over the last six years Epping Boys' High School students have been selected in Australian School Boys teams in Baseball, Soccer, Rugby Union and Hockey.
  • We have achieved at the highest level possible in a diversity of sports over the last ten years:
    1995        NSWCHS Table Tennis Championship
    1995        Robson Shield in Rugby Union
    1998        NSWCHS Proud Shield in Baseball
    2001        Turner Cup in Soccer - the largest knockout competition in the southern hemisphere
    2003        NSWCHS Puma Cup in Soccer
    2003        Canadian Rugby Tour
  • 2004        Buchan Shield (15 Yrs Rugby) semi finalists.
  • 2005        NZ Rugby/Soccer Tour
  • 2006        Canadian Rugby Tour

While these elite achievements help mould our traditions and school spirit, the real benefits of the emphasis we place on sport include:

  • development of a sense of belonging;
  • opportunity to share in achievements;
  • development of cooperative team spirit and fair play;
  • opportunity for leadership development;
  • challenge of extending oneself;
  • acceptance of defeat graciously.

Extra Curricular Activities

There is a high expectation that all boys participate in at least one extra curricular activity.  Currently the school publishes an Extra Curricular Activity Booklet offering over 60 such activities spanning music, drama, debating, peer support, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, chess, Streamwatch, Inter-School Christian Fellowship, visual arts, photography, gifted and talented workshops and camps, and numerous sporting groups.

Some recent highlights of opportunities and achievements in these activities include:

  • Numerous overseas sporting tours to USA, New Zealand and Canada.
  • Every boy playing senior rugby is a member of our now ‘famous’ Rugby Choir - - - featured on ABC Radio in 2004.
  • Our Stage Band, Concert Band and Choir have recently enjoyed outstanding successes, winning first place in the 2004 Ryde Eisteddfod and obtaining Gold Awards at the 43rd Annual School Band Music Festival.  They have also been selected to play in state concerts at the Opera House.
  • Junior and Senior Drama Ensembles have been consistently selected to perform in the State Drama Festival over a period of several years.
  • The annual Visual Arts Exhibition of students' work is now a well-recognised event on the local calendar.
  • Approximately 40 students are currently involved in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.  Over the last three years 42 students have completed Bronze, Silver or Gold Awards.
  • Over the last eight years, ten students per year have participated in the Streamwatch water-monitoring program.  We have been awarded the Dolphin Award for Excellence for the last three years.

These and the many other extra-curricula activities offered at Epping Boys' High School demonstrate the outstanding dedication and unselfish commitment of the staff to the philosophy that the true pursuit of excellence involves growth and development of the mind, body and spirit.
