Student Leadership

In line with targets in the school’s Management Plan, a number of training opportunities are being provided for elected school leaders.  We provide a very successful three-day leadership camp for newly elected prefects in Term 3.  In addition, there are now joint meetings of all elected student leaders where role and responsibilities are defined, targets set and additional external leadership training opportunities are encouraged.

In 2007 the Leadership in the Middle School Program (LIMS) was incorporated into our training for the Middle School.

Prefects

  • Epping Boys High School operates a strong prefect system.  Prefects are selected from Year 11 students and elected by a joint student and staff election.
  • Epping Boys High School enjoys outstanding student leadership with the positions of Prefect, Senior Prefect, Vice Captain and Captain being highly coveted.
  • The prefect body actively assist the school in the following ways:
    • Act as a role model to younger boys in terms of behaviour, decorum and dress;
    • Monitor and assist in the maintenance of a high standard of student uniform;
    • Act as student hosts at official functions, such as Parent/Teacher Nights, orientation days, formal assemblies and other special occasions;
    • All prefects are rostered on daily roll call and bus line duties;
    • Active participation with school and formal assemblies

Students’ Representative Council

  • Over the last two years the SRC strengthened its involvement in school decision-making.
  • Elections are held in term 4 for the ensuing year and 24 members are elected, four from each form.
  • The SRC operates the two Coke machines and controls the income from that source.
  • Traditionally, the SRC has generously supported a number of students representing the school on interstate or overseas activities.  They have also provided a number of significant student facilities.

House Captains

The school’s house system has been revitalised resulting in a much bigger role for house captains and vice-captains.

Elections for these positions are held Term 1 each year.  As with Prefects and SRC members, students complete a nomination form.  When elected, their role encompasses not only student participation in the three main sports carnivals held each year, but also the organisation of student participation in the broad range of activities on offer at the school.  The goal of the house captains is to engender school spirit and participation in an effort to win the coveted house trophy award, which is awarded at Speech Day.

Mentoring

A mentoring program was recently initiated in which students from Year 9 are trained to help provide a smooth transition from primary to high school for our Year 7 students. Three younger students are placed into a group with one older student in order that they may work as a group that provides mutual support. This program replaces the already successful peer support program by building on the best elements of it and adding to it in a way that facilitates closer peer ties. This program not only helps the newest members of school adapt to their new environment, but also gives the older students an opportunity to develop their leadership skills, as well as learning to accept responsibility for the welfare of others.

Network Cafe

Following representations from some students, the Network Café has been established as another leadership opportunity for students in Years 9 – 11.  The management team run the program as a small business, employing other students and assessing market needs.

Sports Captain

Responsible for helping the Sports Coordinator in sport related matters.  Sportsman of the Week and the grade sport winning teams are announced each week at assembly.

Individual Sport Captains and Leadership Group

Grade sports captains and senior players have an important leadership role in their teams eg the open grade rugby squad elect a five-member senior players group to represent them in rugby related matters.  They meet regularly with the coaches.
