Sport Policy

Sport is an essential part of a school's total curriculum. It provides opportunities for physical and social development and encourages sportsmanship and healthy attitudes to recreation.  Physical recreational activities, other than recognised sports, are included in the sports program.

The school provides a wide range of sporting activities:  athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, bush walking, bush bike riding, cricket, cross country, golf, hockey, ice skating, lawn bowls, weight training, rugby union, soccer, indoor soccer, swimming, table tennis, ten pin bowling, tennis, Oz Tag, volleyball, water polo and rock climbing.

Grade Sport is conducted in two competitions (summer and winter) in the North Western Metropolitan High Schools Sports Association.  Competitions are conducted on Wednesday afternoons.  Epping Boys’ has a proud tradition in this competition with selected teams being of a high standard.

Due to the large geographical boundary of the sporting zone, Grade Sport of necessity involves travel.  Wherever possible junior team travel is catered for with special bus transport.  Students in Years 10 to 12 are, on occasions, required to travel independently.

Social Sport competitions are regarded as important educational exercises.  Competitions are conducted where possible.  Effective Social Sport participation improves the level of our competition in zone sports and carnivals.  A student also has the chance to try a sport without the pressure of inter-school play, until he feels he is confident enough to play and represent the school.

15 Yrs and 13 Yrs Rugby Zone Premiers 2004
Preference to Social Sports will be given to students who trial for but are not selected for grade competition.  Students are encouraged to try out for at least one Grade Sport for the school each year.

Sport Times

The starting time for grade teams is 1.00 pm.  Finishing times may vary from normal dismissal times and students should adhere to the times set.

The order of play is:  Junior teams before senior teams, B-grade teams before A-grade teams.  For example 15 years before 1st Grade, 14B’s before 14A’s.

The starting time for Social Sport varies for each activity.  Most Social Sports commence at 12.50 pm.  Some exceptions apply where travel time is greater or venue availability dictates time.  Teachers meet students at a designated meeting point and time and then escort them to their sports venue ready to commence at 1.00 pm.  Most Social Sport concludes at 2.30 pm, when the roll will be marked.

Non Sport

Dental, medical, driving tests appointments, etc, should not be made for Wednesday afternoon.  Students who are not able to participate in sport because of a medical condition or injury will attend the non-sport room for private study.  Students not participating in sport must supply a note endorsed by their parents/guardians.

Uniforms

On Wednesdays, all boys are to wear either:

  • the full school sports uniform (green PE shirt, green PE shorts, white or school football socks,  track shoes, school tracksuit) to and from school,
    or
  • full school uniform to and from sport.

During the playing of sport every boy is to be attired in the proper sports uniform as outlined in the uniform regulation for each sport.  A student not wearing the proper uniform will not be allowed to play sport.  A sport detention will be issued on the second infringement and on each subsequent infringement.

Students must go home after sport in FULL sports uniform or FULL school uniform.

Student Conduct

Code of behaviour

  • Be a good sport.
  • Play for enjoyment.
  • Work hard for your team as well as yourself.
  • Treat all team-mates and opponents as you enjoy being treated yourself.
  • Play by the rules.
  • Co-operate with team and game officials.
  • Control your behaviour on and off the field.
  • Learn to value honest effort, skilled performance and improvement.
  • Foul or illegal play will not be tolerated.

Students are encouraged to support the school teams. Such support is to adhere to our School Code of Behaviour.

Travelling on Public Transport

Conduct to and from sport on public transport is expected to be of the highest standard as the school is on show on these occasions.  Good manners and common courtesy is expected to be shown to members of the public at all times.  Where buses are hired to transport students to/from sport, teachers will travel on the bus.

Incidents

Dismissals from the field of play

The referee or umpire is the sole judge. Being human, he/she may make occasional mistakes which are to be accepted without criticism by players, parents and supporters.  Boys should be aware that the referee’s decision is final.  If a boy has a problem, he must see his coach who will then deal with the problem.

Injuries

If the injury is serious, the teacher will phone for an ambulance immediately, (the school contributes to the Ambulance Fund), and the boy’s parents will be notified.

Sports Coordinator
Mr Mick Hoban is responsible for the Sport program in both Social and Grade Sports.  Cases of poor behaviour, suspensions from field of play and incorrect uniform will be reported to Mr Hoban, Sports Coordinator.
