The prefect system was introduced in the first years of the school's existence and by 1959 the school community consisted of one thousand and four first, second and third year students, taught by thirty-seven teachers and organised by sixteen prefects. In 1960, the school teaching staff had increased to forty to cope with the new senior courses offered. There were also more prefects.
In the first few years of the school's existence, prefects came from the two senior years but by 1962 all sixteen came from fifth year. They have come from final year students ever since.
Besides assisting with the general running of the school, the prefects have contributed to the school life by organising dances. In 1963, when one dance collapsed through lack of support, enquiries revealed that most boys couldn't dance. The prefects master organised dancing classes on Mondays and Fridays and at the end of term a most successful dance was held. Since 1976 the prefects have done invaluable work helping Year 7 classes to settle into secondary school.
A greater range of students was involved in the life of the school when a Students' Representative Council was established in 1962. It was responsible for worthwhile improvements in student welfare. The SRC played a large role in the establishing the student car park. In 1966, in conjunction with the Australian Road Safety Council, the SRC organised a Driver Education Course. |
