Homework Policy

The concept of homework for all students at all stages of their learning is supported by the Department of Education and Training and by the teachers at Epping Boys’ High School.

“Education is not just in the classroom!”

Essentially, homework should be seen as an educational activity which arises from an interesting, stimulating and appropriate school experience.  It should be seen to be deserving of attention out of school hours.  Homework should be seen by teachers, students and parents as consistent with lifelong learning.

Homework is set for the following reasons:

  • reinforcement of skills;
  • establishing good work habits;
  • extending class practice;
  • catching up when a student has been absent;
  • building on class work;
  • supplementing the sometimes lengthy periods between lessons;
  • engaging in activities that cannot be done in the classroom;
  • preparing students for the next lesson;
  • completing the content of a particular course;
  • revision.
Homework given at Epping Boys’ high School can be expected to include the following:
  • Projects
  • Set work
  • Specific reading
  • Assignments
  • Surveys
  • Wide reading
  • Research
  • Writing
  • Revision
  • Completion/correction of work done in class

Staff at Epping Boys’ High School suggest the following amount of homework per night:

Years 7/8                      1 hour

Years 9/10                   1.5 hours

Years 11/12                 3 hours

Some students may require more time than this.

Student:

It is expected a student at Epping Boys' High School should:

  • be responsible for personal learning;
  • submit homework at the correct time;
  • develop the regular discipline of daily homework;
  • think about what he does, including the regular monitoring of progress;
  • develop a study program;
  • use the diary to record all the necessary homework details as well as other important school information, for example,  excursions.  The school will help with guidance for a pupil where this is needed;
  • communicate with teachers when help is needed.

Staff:

It is expected a member of staff will:

  • be familiar with the homework policy and ensure that students are equally familiar;
  • encourage the use of a diary by having students place their diaries on the desk each lesson and by allowing time for students to write in their homework details at the end of the lesson;
  • monitor, check and correct homework promptly;
  • contact parents where persistent problems occur;
  • set clearly defined tasks with a due date which is reasonable and realistic;
  • give a student a chance to come back for help if he is having a problem with a piece of work;
  • refer to homework on reports.

Parents:

It is hoped parents of students at Epping Boys' High School will:

  • show interest and enthusiasm for their son’s work;
  • read and discuss current affairs with their son;
  • provide a suitable home study area and conditions;
  • communicate your high expectations to their son;
  • communicate that effort leads to success;
  • know what is needed and accept a supervising role;
  • praise efforts;
  • communicate with teachers.
