Computing Faculty Policies

Assessment Policy

  • Assessment structure will follow the Board of Studies Guidelines

  • In general the School’s Assessment Policy will apply to Computing Students.
  • The faculty assessment details for a given course will be issued to students at the commencement of each course.
  • Written guidelines on the assessment for a given project will be issued with each project.
  • A computing teacher other than the student's class teacher will independently assess appeals or assessment queries.
  • A teacher may give a student an extension of time for a project if he/she feels it is warranted.  Often technological problems and other school activities impact on a student's ability to complete a task.
  • Major projects will be awarded 0 (zero) if they are not submitted by the due date.  Consideration will be given to students who provide good evidence (in writing) for why the deadline was not met.
  • Because practical tasks are learning tasks and assessable, some leeway will be given to students who cannot complete the work on time.  Students will lose 10% per day for lateness and after 5 days they will be awarded zero.
  • Except for specified group work students should develop their own solutions and submit their own work. Failure to abide by this rule will result in a loss of marks. (Teachers will use their own discretions in this area.)
  • All assessment marks awarded by an individual class teacher will be standardised against a set of common scores, to minimise teacher bias
  • Where a student misses a test with good cause, if practicable students will be allowed to sit the test, otherwise they will be given an estimate for the test.
  • Students who miss a test without good cause will be awarded 0 (zero).

Attendance Policy

  • Attendance will be checked during each lesson
  • Fractional Truancy will be recorded by the class teacher, in the Faculty Discipline Register, and action taken according to school policy.
  • Persistent lateness will be treated as Fractional Truancy.

 Discipline Policy

  • Staff will implement the Schools Discipline Policy (using ROY)
  • Classroom teachers will be responsible for ensuring that students abide by our school's Code of Conduct Statement and Internet Contract as well as our Laboratory Rules.
  • Classroom teachers will manage their own day-to-day discipline problems.
  • Persistent discipline breaches will be reported to the Head Teacher and recorded in STAN.  Action will be taken according to our schools welfare Policy.
  • Staff will distribute Green cards for outstanding work and consistent effort.

Homework Policy

  • Homework in the IST course will be purposeful and is designed to reinforce concepts or support their project work.  Students are encouraged to do additional work on their projects at home if they can.
  • Junior students may be issued homework up to once per cycle
  • Homework will be checked by the class teacher
  • Teachers will record completion of homework activities in their mark book.
  • Senior Students are expected to do additional work at home to complete projects and assessment tasks by the due dates.

Internet Usage and Class Work

  • Students will be permitted to use the Internet during class time for specified research activities or to pass data files to and from home.
  • Internet games, chat sessions, and other games will not be allowed
  • Junior students will not require a notebook.  Course notes and other materials will be available on the school’s Internet and Intranet sites and students should maintain an electronic library of all their work.
  • Senior Students should maintain an electronic library of all their notes and materials. As well as paper-based copies of all work.
  • Students will be required to submit work to teachers in either a paper-based format or an electronic format.
